A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by an intense, persistent, and irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. It differs from fear, which is a normal and appropriate response to a perceived threat or danger. Fear is a natural emotion that helps us stay safe by motivating us to avoid potentially harmful situations, but phobias are an exaggerated and irrational response to a situation that is not inherently dangerous or threatening. Phobias can significantly interfere with a person’s daily life and require treatment, such as therapy and/or medication, to help manage symptoms and overcome fears.
